Gayathri took for the centrepiece, Shankarabaranam (king of carnatic ragas) and rendered the song “Saroja Dalanetri” in grandeur.
The maestros, Akkarai Subbhalakshmi and mridangist Manoj Siva gave excellent accompaniments for Gayathri’s raga vistharas.
In the second half Gayathri quickly accommodated a few audience requests. She set the melody and richness in Annamacharya’s Bhaavayami in Yaman Kalyan. Gayathri treated us to a musical feast with 15-16 songs (includes Saaramaina in Behaag, Purandaradasar krithi – Srinivasa, Muthuswamy Dikshitar’s Rangapuravihaara in Brindaavana Saaranga, Sabapathikku in Abogi). The viruttam she sang -“Naalen Seyyum”, other Tamil songs – “Manadir Uganthathu Muruganin Roopam”, Subramanya Bharathi’s “Varuvai varuvai varuvai Kanna” were melodious. She concluded her brilliant concert with a tillana on Anjaneya Swami in ragam Vasantha and a mangalam on Aandal.
Gayathri, Akkarai & Manoj Siva truly left a musical mark on Wellingtonians.
